We know that readers read for different reasons.
Readers read for fun.
Readers read to get information and to learn.
Readers read to exercise the brain to become better readers.
Reading stories helps us to learn about other people, their problems, reactions, emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Reading helps us to understand other people and ourselves, to get along better and to solve problems. (As we talked about kindness during our read aloud)
Reading books gives us inspiration and ideas for writing.

The readers in Grade 3 used the reading time for reading stories and for reading books about the human body. I continued with individual reading conferences to get to know each reader a bit better. On three different mornings we had lovely sessions when everyone had a chance to share a book or two that they loved and recommended for others.
