UOI

We started the week speaking about different aspects of health. If people often think of health just as physical health but being healthy means more than that. It is equally important to take care of our emotions, relationships and mind.

This Tuesday Ms. Lucia came to visit to speak about emotional health.

She asked us questions and shared some useful tips. The students shared their stories and thoughts.
I tried to capture as much as I could.

How do others know how we feel?
We show with faces
Or we talk.
When we look sad, people will come and ask.
People will notice different feelings.
Mean people would not care. Kind people come over and ask
As a friend you can help, when they talk to you, they feel better.

How good are you at reading other person's emotions?
Sometimes he looks angry but we have to ask because sometimes we don't really know.

We can be healthy by eating nicely, by sleeping well, by exercising and also by thinking.

What do we need to think for us to feel good?
Think of the good things
To keep your mind happy think very nice thoughts.
You can keep the sun in your heart.
Even when it is raining, you can think of the sun in your heart, and it makes you feel good.

What can we do to have happy thoughts? How can we have happy thoughts?
Students:
When you play together
Playing games in the park, and other things that you like.

We try to look for different ways to look for happiness.
Happiness is like school, you come every day and you work on it every day.
You have to think happy thoughts.
When we find feeling sad we try to make ourselves happy.
Invite friends, talk, go for a bike ride or walk.

How can you change your thinking when you are sad?
Students:
Thinks about the things and people you like.
When you meet your friend and you make funny faces and laugh.
To be happy is made of small things. Concentrate on the good things.
Well maybe there is something good about it. Think back what you have done well.

Put your attention on the good things.
Feeling good and thinking good keeps your immune system well.
When you are happy bacteria can't come so easily.
Immune system is stronger when you are happy.

Students:
You need to think good things because it makes you happier
When you play with your friends you are happy and the sun of the heart is happy

Thank you, Ms. Lucia

Another thing we looked at this week was healthy eating. We created a food pyramid and compared it to food pyramids of the world.

We spoke about sugar, why our brain craves it, what may be the negative effects of eating too much sugar, and what to do instead of reaching for sweet treats.
Ms. Dee visited us during this lesson and she was very impressed how actively the students participates, asked questions, shared what they knew, respectfully talked to their partner and  explained what they had learned.
